For most UK homeowners, a heat pump is something you install for winter.

 

It keeps you warm, it replaces the gas boiler, it lowers your carbon footprint. That's the story most people hear.

 

But there's a part of the story that rarely gets told: many heat pump systems can also keep your home cool in summer.

 

As UK summers get warmer and more unpredictable, that's becoming a genuinely useful question to ask. Not "do I need air conditioning?" but "does my heating system already have the answer?"

 

How Can a Heat Pump Cool a Home?

 

A heat pump works by moving heat, not creating it.

 

In winter, that means extracting heat from the outside air and moving it into your home. In summer, with the right system design, that process can run in reverse. Instead of pulling heat in, the system pulls heat out.

 

This isn't the same as bolting on a separate air conditioning unit. It's the same heat pump, the same pipework, doing the opposite job depending on the season.

 

Whether this works for your home - and how well - depends on what's delivering that heating and cooling around your house. That's where fan coils, underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation come in.

 

Fan Coils: The Most Effective Way to Cool

 

If cooling is a genuine priority for your home, fan coil units are usually the most effective way to deliver it.

 

A fan coil works a bit like a small, quiet indoor unit. It circulates air across a coil connected to your heat pump, and depending on the season, that coil is either warming the air or cooling it.

 

Fan coils respond quickly. They can noticeably change the temperature of a room within minutes, which makes them well suited to spaces where you want fast, controllable cooling - a bedroom on a hot night, for example, or a home office during a summer heatwave.

 

They're not usually installed on their own, though. Most homes use a mix of fan coils in specific rooms alongside underfloor heating elsewhere in the property.

 

Underfloor Heating: Cooling Is Possible, But More Subtle

 

Underfloor heating can also run in reverse to provide a cooling effect, but it behaves very differently to a fan coil.


Because underfloor systems heat or cool, a large, low-temperature surface rather than blowing air directly into a room, the effect is gentler and slower to notice. It can take the edge off a warm room rather than dramatically drop the temperature.

 

This makes underfloor cooling better suited to taking the peak off summer heat throughout the day, rather than delivering the fast, targeted cooling a fan coil provides in a single room.

 

For many homes, the two work well together: underfloor heating providing gentle, whole-home temperature management, with fan coils reserved for rooms that need something stronger.

 

Why MVHR Matters for Comfort, Even Though It Doesn't Cool Directly

 

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery, or MVHR, doesn't cool your home in the same way a fan coil or underfloor system does. Its job is ventilation - constantly replacing stale indoor air with fresh, filtered air from outside, while recovering heat from the air being extracted.

 

But in summer, that constant air movement plays an important supporting role in how cool a home feels. A well-ventilated home avoids the stuffy, stagnant air that makes a warm room feel worse than it needs to. In a well-insulated, airtight home - the kind that benefits most from a heat pump in the first place - good ventilation isn't optional. It's what stops the home feeling closed-in and overheated once the sun's been on it all day.

 

That's why MVHR is usually considered alongside fan coils and underfloor heating when we talk about summer comfort, even though its main job is air quality rather than temperature.

 

Does Every Heat Pump System Offer Cooling?

 

Not automatically.

 

Cooling capability depends on how the system is specified from the outset - the heat pump itself, the indoor units it's connected to, and the pipework and controls throughout the house. A system installed purely for heating won't necessarily be able to cool, even if the heat pump itself is technically capable of it.

 

This is why it's worth raising cooling as a priority early, at the design stage, rather than assuming it'll be included by default or trying to add it in later. Retrofitting cooling into a heating-only system is possible in some cases, but it's rarely as straightforward or cost-effective as specifying it from the start.

 

Is Heat Pump Cooling Right for Your Home?

 

Heat pump cooling tends to make the most sense if:

 

You live in a well-insulated, modern or newly renovated home, where summer overheating is a genuine issue rather than an occasional inconvenience.

 

You're already planning a heat pump installation and want to know whether cooling could be included as part of the same system.

 

You want a quieter, more integrated alternative to a standalone air conditioning unit, without the visible outdoor units and additional wiring that come with retrofitted air con.

 

It may matter less if your home rarely overheats, or if you're not planning any heating system changes in the near future in which case, it's simply useful to know the option exists for when you are.

 

The Bigger Picture: One System, Multiple Jobs

 

The real takeaway here isn't "get a heat pump for the cooling." It's that a heat pump, properly designed, can do more than most homeowners realise - heating in winter, cooling in summer, and, alongside good ventilation, keeping a home comfortable all year round.

 

That only happens when the system is thought through as a whole from the start, rather than each part specified in isolation.
