If you’ve been thinking about making the switch to an electric vehicle (EV), we get it. As the need for sustainable alternatives becomes increasingly apparent, more and more people in Bristol and beyond are exploring cleaner, greener ways to get around. EVs are not only better for the environment, but they’re also quieter, cheaper to run and increasingly practical.

Bristol, in particular, is making big moves to support this transition. From rolling out more EV charge points to offering incentives and planning future upgrades, the city is committed to making electric travel a real option for everyone. At Green Flare, we’re excited about what this means – not just for our environment, but for local residents and businesses who want to take positive steps towards a cleaner lifestyle.

Why Are Electric Vehicles So Important?

Let’s start with the big picture. Traditional petrol and diesel cars are one of the biggest contributors to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. EVs help reduce that impact dramatically. With no tailpipe emissions, they’re much kinder on our lungs and the planet. And when they’re powered using renewable energy, like solar power from your roof, they can be close to zero-emissions altogether.

For a city like Bristol, which has set bold targets to become net zero by 2030, cleaner transport is essential. That means encouraging more walking and cycling, improving public transport, and helping more drivers make the switch to electric.

How Is Bristol Doing So Far?

Bristol’s making solid progress. There are already over 120 new EV charging bays in place across the city, with more being added regularly. Whether you’re parking on the street, in a public car park or at a shopping centre, you’re likely to find a charge point within easy reach.

Many of these chargers are part of the Revive network, a local charging scheme supported by West of England councils. They’re designed to be accessible and user-friendly, with a growing number of fast-charging options to make topping up your battery easier than ever.

Still, there’s more to do. Not everyone has a driveway to install a home charger. And while the network’s growing, demand is too.

What Are the Challenges?

Expanding EV infrastructure isn’t without its hurdles. Installing new charge points can be expensive, and finding suitable spots can be tricky. There’s also the need to balance technology upgrades with planning regulations, safety standards and community needs.

That said, changes are happening. The government has recently scrapped the need for planning permission when installing charge points on driveways in England, which should speed things up for many homeowners. And in Bristol, the council is actively working on more inclusive solutions, like on-street charging for residents without private parking.

What’s Next for Bristol?

The next few years are set to bring a real transformation. Bristol City Council plans to install over 180 new charge points by March 2026 as part of a wider regional effort. These will be spread across train stations, car parks and residential areas, so they’re where people actually need them.

For anyone considering an EV, this means more confidence. More chargers, more reliability, and fewer worries about running out of battery when you're out and about.

Is Now a Good Time to Switch to an EV?

Honestly, yes. The support is there, and it’s only growing. There are still government grants available to help with the cost of installing home chargers (especially useful if you have off-street parking). And EVs themselves are becoming more affordable, with better battery ranges and more second-hand options on the market.

Add to that the savings on running costs, reduced vehicle tax and exemptions from clean air zone charges, and going electric starts to look pretty appealing.

How Green Flare Can Help
