How Does Battery Storage Work?

Solar Power, Yours When You Need It

What Is Solar Battery Storage?

Solar battery storage captures and stores the electricity your solar panels generate – so it’s available to use later. Instead of exporting excess energy back to the grid, your battery system holds it until your home needs it, helping you make the most of your own renewable power.

Here’s how it works in simple terms:

  • During the day, your solar panels generate electricity. Any surplus energy – that you don’t use immediately – charges the battery.

  • In the evening or at night, your battery discharges, powering your home when the panels aren’t generating.

  • If the battery fills up, any additional energy can still be exported to the grid, depending on your setup.

With the right system in place, solar battery storage can also help protect your home during power outages, or allow you to buy cheap electricity overnight (on certain tariffs) and use it during peak times. It’s flexible, intelligent, and increasingly essential for homeowners who want to get the most from their renewable energy.

The Technology Behind Solar Batteries

At the heart of every solar battery storage system is a smart, compact unit designed to store and manage energy efficiently. While the technology behind it is advanced, the goal is simple: to help you use more of your own solar power, and rely less on the grid.

Most modern systems use lithium-ion batteries, similar to the ones used in electric vehicles. These batteries are compact, long-lasting, and capable of handling regular charge and discharge cycles with minimal energy loss. The stored energy remains in the system until your home needs it – whether that’s at night, during a cloudy day, or when grid electricity is at its most expensive.

Key components include:

  • Battery modules – Where your energy is physically stored, often in a modular design that can be scaled as your energy needs grow.

  • Inverter or hybrid inverter – Converts the battery’s DC electricity into AC power your home can use, and vice versa during charging.

  • Battery management system (BMS) – Ensures the battery operates safely and efficiently, protecting it from overcharging or excessive discharge.

  • Monitoring software – Allows you to track energy use, set preferences, and monitor performance in real-time via smartphone or home dashboard.

There are also two main types of system setup:

  • DC-coupled – Connects the battery directly to your solar panels, often more efficient for new installations.

  • AC-coupled – Connects the battery on the AC side of your system, ideal for retrofitting to existing solar arrays.

At Green Flare, we design each system to suit the unique layout and energy usage of your home – ensuring every component works together for maximum benefit.

How a Battery Storage System Works Day to Day

Once installed, a solar battery storage system quietly manages your energy in the background – charging, discharging, and optimising your usage without you needing to lift a finger. But behind the scenes, there’s a lot going on to help you save more and waste less.

Here’s how it typically works across a 24-hour cycle:

  • Morning to Midday: As the sun rises and your solar panels begin generating electricity, your home uses what it needs first. Any excess power is automatically directed into your battery, charging it for later use.

  • Afternoon to Evening: As your energy demand increases and solar generation slows down, your system begins to discharge stored energy – powering your appliances, lighting, or heating without pulling from the grid.

  • Overnight: If there’s still energy left in the battery, it continues to support your home through the night. If needed, your system seamlessly switches to grid power when the battery is depleted.

  • Smart Tariffs: Some systems can also be configured to charge from the grid during off-peak hours, when electricity is cheapest, and discharge during peak hours. This is known as load shifting, and it can significantly reduce energy bills – especially for households with heat pumps or EVs.

  • Power Outages: Certain battery systems offer backup functionality, meaning they can continue to power your essential circuits even during a grid failure (depending on design and permissions).

With real-time monitoring and app-based controls, you can see exactly how your energy is flowing at any moment – giving you full visibility and peace of mind.
